XMAS Designworks is a multipotentiality creative studio serving clients — individuals, businesses, events, campaigns — using non-linear problem solving to communicate estimable values through the ideation, design, and application of sharp, efficient visual language.

DESIGN
GRAPHIC, FURNITURE, SPATIAL
Lead by ideas, design is bound not by rules or genre, but by values and principles. The design sensibility of XMAS is born of minimalist aesthetic philosophies of Pennsylvania Shakers, the Bauhaus, and Scandinavian design. Through study in San Francisco, Copenhagen, and Providence, and practice in NYC and Philadelphia, XMAS was developed to accommodate nearly any design project with solutions of comfort and joy.

XMAS’s 2022 furniture collection debut: Reversible chair; small stacking stool/stand; skewered double wicker floor lamp; and a cement Brutalist birdhouse.
The Reversible Chair is made of baltic birch plywood and laminate. There are two different seatbacks per chair (four total), each offering a “soft” or “sharp” version, changeable for desired mood or form.
Both seatbacks are hinged to the seat. To change them, one is folded down and secured with the wood dowel, the chair flipped over, opposite dowel removed and placed at the top “legs,” and seatback raised up to lean against the dowel.
Future versions will explore color block designs, and different laminates and substrates, including for outdoor use.

ABOUT
XMAS Designworks was founded in 2020 by Andrew Russel Coates to cultivate the concept of generalist design and provide clients with design, objects and visual communication full of good cheer.
Andrew has studied broad genres of art and design at some of the best institutions around the world, and practiced in Brooklyn before relocating to Philadelphia for a more ideal studio setting.
Having relocated to Chicago in late 2023, XMAS began its first significant interior design project with a gut renovation in Logan Square that will serve as an ongoing case study and experimental design lab. Follow along on Instagram to see that process.
XMAS was also created to provide consulting, project management, and vendor-sourcing for artists, galleries and museums. Please contact to inquire about reduced rates for non-profits.
